May in Switzerland is when spring is in full swing, the weather is near perfect and it is not too hot as to put you off from a long hike. It is also a lovely time of year for a bracing dip in one of the many lakes or a swim through a city on the river, (yes this happens regularly, it is even a commute to work for some!). It is worth knowing that May alongside October, is one of the months that public transport in the mountains, such as cable cars, mountain railways etc often take a few weeks to renovate before the upcoming peak season, so be sure to check opening hours for any mountain excursions you might want to take to avoid being disappointed.
May is also one of the quietest months to visit Switzerland, (if not the quietest), with fewer tourists and therefore fewer crowds around, which is great to getting cheaper accommodation. It is worth noting though that there are a number of regional holidays in Switzerland in May, so although there may be less tourists, there may be more Swiss holidaying!
Weather In Switzerland In May
During May in Switzerland the average daily temperature is 20°C / 68°F, and night temperatures of 7°C / 44.6°F, making it a great month to start exploring the mountain trails which have been covered with snow. With an average of 90mm of rainfall across the country in May, you may get a couple of rainy days, or more often than not a rain shower in the afternoon.

This holiday is yet another day’s holiday for the Swiss, however it is only celebrated in the following cantons: Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Fribourg, Jura, Lucerne, Neuchâtel, Schaffhausen, Solothurn, Thurgau, Ticino and Zurich.
Important other dates:
