Top places to visit in Seville

1. Plaza de España

Top sights to visit in Seville

Plaza de España is a landmark square, (well more of a semi-circle), and pavilion within the Parque de María Luisa with a large fountain and ornate painted ceramic tiles lining the walls, floor and bridges. So most definitely a top sights to visit in Seville! Built in 1928 it is a beautiful place to wander around on a warm autumn day. It is a little-known fact that the bridges over the moat into the main square actually represent the four ancient kingdoms of Spain and it was also used as a filming location in Star Wars!

2. Parque de María Luisa

The Maria Luisa Park is Seville’s main public park that runs from the Guadalquivir River through to the Plaza de España. This luscious green paradise is full of pretty landscaped gardens, lakes, fountains and monuments. Also, the sheer number of trees provide very welcome shade from the heat of the Spanish sun.

3. Seville Cathedral

Seville Cathedral is also known as the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See. It is one of the largest Christian churches in the world and sits on the site of a 12th-century Almohad mosque, with the mosque’s minaret (the Giralda) still stood beside it. This Giralda can be climbed up in a series of ramps which were built so guards could ride up on horseback. There is also a beautiful patio outside the cathedral planted with 66 Naranjos or orange trees!

4. Alcázar

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to visit the Alcázar of Seville but I will be back to see inside for all its beauty! This landmark royal palace is filled with fountains, ornate arches and incredible 16th-century tiles, but book to visit it before you get to Spain! If not then like me you will be asked to wait in a 2-hour queue just to see if you can get tickets!

5. Metropol Parasol

Top sights to see in Seville

Metropol Parasol is in the old quarter of Seville but the most modern structure around. Completed in April 2011 this awesome wooden structure, designed by Jürgen Mayer, is the go-to place for incredible views over the city from its rooftop walkways and viewpoints. I spent a good while wandering the walkways with the undulating sculptural design all around me and the views never get boring!
